Cancer

Overview:

There are many kinds of cancer, but all start because abnormal cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissue and can spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body.

Unlike cancer cells, normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries.

Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

Treatments:

A person’s age, health and the type of cancer are factors that help determine which type of treatment should be utilized. There are four major types of treatment for cancer:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Biologic Therapies

It is common for patients to experience some form of cancer related anemia, neutropenia and fatigue from cancer treatments. Medications used to combat these conditions are Aranesp, Neulasta, Neupogen and Procrit. These are self-injected and stimulate red and white blood cells. Medications used for oral chemotherapy include Thalomid, Gleevic and Xeloda.
